Case Study
Despite her functioning floor furnace and seven space heaters, Lynette and her husband’s 1915 home was never warm. The electric breakers often flipped, and the pipes kept freezing on one corner of the house. Lynette prayed for a way to make their home safer and their lives less stressful. When she found out about the Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program, her prayers were answered when she discovered her family qualified to receive updates to the drafty old home free of charge. Contractors sealed air leaks around windows and doors; installed attic, sidewall, and foundation insulation; removed the unsafe floor furnace and space heaters; and replaced them with a new high-efficiency furnace and ductwork. While there, the weatherization team was able to provide some other minor electrical and plumbing repairs making their lives safer and more comfortable. Lynette’s gas bill was subsequently reduced, and the electric bill has been reflecting a $60 to $80 savings per month.
Program Description
Weatherization improves energy efficiency and lowers utility bills by ensuring your home holds in heat and air conditioning while keeping hot and cold air out. Eligible households receive a comprehensive home energy audit to identify inefficiencies and health and safety concerns. Based on a home’s audit results, improvements may include:
- Sealing of drafts and air leaks, caulking doors and windows, weatherstripping
- Testing, cleaning and repairs of heating and cooling systems and water heaters
- Adding insulation to ceilings, walls, floors, and foundations
- Lighting, refrigerator, and fan upgrades
All services and upgrades are provided free of charge by our certified energy auditors and network of professional crews and contractors.
