Community Services Block Grant

Case Study

When a rural Kansan found herself in crisis due to financial instability, she found help from her local community action agency.  The community action agency enrolled her in the Stepping Stones to Success Savings program with the goal of helping her establish a $1,000 emergency savings fund. The program offers a 2:1 match on all participant savings. Following her appointment, the case manager witnessed the participant and her teenage daughter taking a photo in the hall. The mother explained that they were documenting the start of their new life. Thanks to her own resilience and assistance from the local community action agency (funded through the Community Services Block Grant) a fellow Kansan was able to move from financial instability into a place of opportunity.

Program Description

The Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) provides critical funding to Community Action Agencies (CAAs) to operate programs addressing the causes and condition of poverty. Agencies aim to reduce poverty, revitalize low-income communities and empower low-income families and individuals to become fully self-sufficient. CSBG works through eight local eligible entities in Kansas to support services and activities for individuals with low-incomes that alleviate the causes and conditions of poverty in their individual communities.

A small portion of funds is available to partners for innovative programs that serve low-income individuals and families in Kansas.
