Kansas Emergency Rental Assistance (KERA)

The Need

Home has never been more important. Our homes have always provided shelter, but in the midst of the COVID pandemic, home has become so much more. Home is where we receive our health care, educate our children, conduct business, and connect virtually for worship services, community meetings, and social gatherings.

While moratoriums have provided tenants with temporary protection from eviction, rent continues to accrue each month, leaving families unsure how they will pay arrears, and leaving landlords without monthly income to pay bills and manage maintenance and upkeep.

COMING IN MARCH

The Kansas Emergency Rental Assistance program (KERA) will provide rental and utility assistance to households experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID pandemic.

KERA will serve Kansans across the state, except initially, those living within the Wichita city limits. The City of Wichita will administer its own rental assistance program. For more information, Wichita residents should visit the link below.

Funding Source

The Kansas Emergency Rental Assistance (KERA) program is funded through the federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021, which provided the state of Kansas nearly $200 million in rental assistance funding. Governor Kelly designated Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) to serve as the administrator of the majority of these funds through the KERA program.
